Himtrust EP Primer

The Epoxy Primer is used as a priming layer in complex systems of anticorrosive protection based on acrylic, polyurethane, and epoxy, with the following finish coatings:


  • With UV protection – «Himtrust Emacril» enamel, «Himtrust Primer-Enamel PU»;
  • Without UV protection (indoors) – «Himtrust Primer-Enamel EP».

It is employed for priming the metal structures of manufacturing workshops, stadiums, exhibition complexes, airports, bridges, power stations, oil refineries, chemical and petrochemical plants. It can also be applied to concrete surfaces.

Product Description

Base (Component A) — a mixture of anticorrosive pigments and special additives in epoxy resin.

Hardener (Component B) — phenalkamine.

The primer has a high drying speed — no more than 1 hour. The finished coating is strong, flexible, and resistant to mechanical loads (abrasive wear, impact), acids, alkalis, the effects of water, salts, and oils, and withstands short-term heating up to plus 130°C.

Hygienic Characteristics

After curing, the coating does not have a negative impact on human health and the environment.

  • Component A: Causes irritation when it comes into contact with skin and eyes and may trigger an allergic reaction.
  • Component B: Causes irritation upon contact with skin and eyes. It may cause irritation of the upper respiratory tract.

Preparation for Work

Requirements for Preparing the Metallic Surface:

  • Degrease the surface by wiping it with a cloth soaked in an organic solvent such as P-646 according to GOST 18188, P-4 or P-5 according to GOST 7827, acetone according to GOST 2768, or toluene according to GOST 14710.
  • Clean manually or mechanically to roughen the surface:
  • Manual method: use a wire brush, spatula, scraper, abrasive paper, or a hammer for chipping rust.
  • Mechanical method: abrasive blasting, rotary brush, pneumatic hammer, or sanding paper.
  • Ensure no surface defects like dents, scratches, pits, or burrs. Blow off the surface with compressed air according to GOST 9.010.
  • Apply the primer within 12 hours after degreasing for structures exposed to open air, or within 48 hours for indoor structures.

Requirements for Preparing Concrete Surface:

  • Use concrete of grade not lower than M300.
  • Allow at least 28 days for the concrete to cure after pouring.
  • The moisture content of the concrete surface should not exceed 4%, measured with an electronic moisture meter type ВСКМ-12 according to GOST 21718.
  • Process the concrete surface with shot blasting, milling, or grinding equipment, clean from dust, dirt, stains, and depowder.
  • Level the surface, remove projections, weak parts of the base, fill cracks and depressions with a suitable compound.

Requirements for Product Preparation:

Before starting work:

  • Allow the primer and application equipment to acclimate for 24 hours at an air temperature between +15°C to +30°C.
  • Stir Component A to a uniform consistency for 3-5 minutes using a mixer with a spiral attachment (similar to ZUBR MR-1400-21) at 300-450 rpm.
  • Add Component B to Component A at the recommended ratio and mix until homogeneous.

Close the container and let it stand for 20 minutes to eliminate air bubbles from the mix.

Application Conditions Requirements:

  • Ambient temperature should be between +5°C to +30°C.
  • The temperature of the base should be 3°C above the dew point.
  • The relative air humidity should be less than 80%.>

The primer can be applied at reduced temperatures (down to -10°C) and elevated temperatures (up to +35°C), but the surface to be painted must be dry and not icy. The parameters of viscosity, drying time, and curing will vary either increase or decrease.

Safety Measures

Do not work near open sources of fire. Ensure the workspace is equipped with fire extinguishing tools - fire extinguisher (foam, CO2), sand.

Work should be conducted in well-ventilated areas or spaces equipped with supply and exhaust ventilation.

When working with the primer, use personal protective equipment, special clothing, gloves, shoes, safety goggles, and a respirator.

If the product contacts the skin, remove it with a cotton swab or cloth, then wash the skin with warm soapy water. In case of eye contact, rinse with plenty of water. Seek medical attention if irritation occurs.

Rules of Processing/Application:

Apply the primer using:

  • Airless spraying (paint sprayer of the type HYVEST 7300);
  • Pneumatic spraying (paint sprayer of the type FUBAG BASIC S1000/1.8 HP);
  • Manually with a brush or roller.

Apply in 1-3 layers, considering the time of exposure between layers. The total thickness of the finished coating is 60-150 micrometers.

NOTE: The dependence of drying time on temperature is provided for reference purposes. The actual drying time can vary depending on surface temperature, ambient air, the degree of dilution of the material, the thickness of the coating, ventilation efficiency, relative air humidity, and the structural features of the painted surfaces.

Problems and Solutions

Problem: The base of the primer (Component A) delaminates during prolonged storage.
Solution: Stir Component A until a uniform mass is formed for 5 minutes using a mixer with a spiral nozzle (ZUBR MR-1400-21 or similar) at a speed of 300-450 rpm.

Problem: Poor flame spread during spraying due to high viscosity.
Solution: Warm the primer components to a temperature of +15°C to +30°C, keeping them for 24 hours in a heated room, or dilute with a solvent (Table 3). If the flame spread is still insufficient after dilution, change the working pressure of the machine or the diameter of the nozzle.

Transportation and Storage Conditions

The components of the epoxy primer are transported by all types of transport in closed vehicles in accordance with the rules for the transportation of goods, ensuring the preservation of packaging without damage and leaks.

The primer should be stored in covered warehouse premises in closed original packaging in conditions that exclude the ingress of moisture and direct sunlight.

Temperature for storage and transportation of components: from 0°C to +30°C.

Shelf life under recommended conditions:

  • Component A: 18 months from the date of manufacture;
  • Component B: from 6 to 12 months, as recommended by the manufacturer.
